New coffee grinder? How do you get started?

Eerste gebruik koffiemolen - wat moet je doen?

When you buy a new coffee grinder, it comes straight from the factory, and chances are you'll taste that in your first cup of coffee. At FREKKO, we've created a step-by-step plan to help you remove any production residue and ensure the burrs are functioning optimally.

Step-by-step explanation of what you need to do before you can enjoy your freshly ground beans.

1. Weigh coffee

The burrs have never seen coffee before, you can introduce them to coffee.

Weigh 50 grams of coffee.

2. Set the grinding setting

Now just set the burrs to the right position.

Set the grinder to a coarse grind setting. For DF grinders, this is often setting 50.

3. Running in the burrs

50 grams, check, grind setting check, now add the beans. But not all at once!

Grind 10 grams of coffee 5 times on the coarse grind setting.

4. Throw away coffee

Now you have 50 grams of coarsely ground coffee. This is the first coffee your grinder has ever seen; it might still have a bit of a factory flavor.

Discard the ground coffee.

5. Set the grinding setting correctly

Now your grinder is set to a coarse grind setting, you may not want that.

Set the grind setting on the coffee grinder to the setting you want.

6. Drink coffee!

Time to explore your grinder and have some coffee!

Happy brewing :]

How do you choose the right coffee beans?

Always avoid oily coffee beans; you can often see the oily layer on the beans when you open the bag of coffee. This is often the case with very dark roasts.

So choose a slightly lighter roast. We call FREKKO's Brazil a "dark roast," but it's not comparable to the "dark roast" you find in the supermarket. So it's perfectly suitable!

The other FREKKO coffees are medium to light roasts. Suitable for both espresso and filter coffee, and even with these lighter roasts, you won't find any oil on the beans.

You can often assume that if you choose specialty coffee, you have good beans.

How do I clean my grinder?

After a few uses, it's time to clean the grinder. We've created a blog post explaining how to clean your coffee grinder. Because the better you clean it, the longer your grinder will last.

How do I check the zero point of my grinder?

Without beans in the grinding chamber, you can check where the burrs just touch. This gives you a starting point for adjusting your grind size. This way, you can later fine-tune how fine or coarse you grind, depending on your brewing method.

How do I know if I have the right grind size?

Depending on the brewing method you use, you'll adjust the grind size. For filter coffee, use a coarser grind. For espresso, a finer one. Start with a medium setting and adjust based on the brew time and taste.

If the coffee is acidic, grind finer (flow time will be longer).

If the coffee is bitter, grind coarser (flow time will be shorter).

How do I adjust my grinder safely?

Always turn the grinder on when adjusting the grind setting from coarse to finer. This prevents the burrs from blocking or damaging each other.

Never grind finer than the zero point, the point where the burrs just touch. This prevents damage to your grinder and ensures smooth grinding.
